The Darkness Vanishes, for Now

I’ve been hard at work mapping out portions of the game, letting the creative juices flow. Designing a text adventure isn’t just about storytelling it’s about world-building. Every room, obstacle, and character is carefully crafted, connected by a network of ideas brought to life on paper or screen. There’s something exhilarating about creating a world from scratch. It’s a process that makes me feel truly alive.

I’ve always loved the sense of adventure that comes with discovering forgotten treasures, encountering fantastical characters, and weaving stories grounded in a mix of fantasy and realism. These memories take me back to my childhood, to when my parents brought home a clone Windows 95 machine. It came with a box of shareware discs that opened the door to endless exploration. Typing commands into MS-DOS and sifting through clunky menu systems introduced me to hidden gems games created by passionate individuals with the spirit of modern-day artists. Those days were filled with excitement and discovery. Many of the games were Doom or Wolfenstein clones, but the era also saw a surge in text adventures. Whether made with BASIC or simple game-making tools, these adventures captured the imagination. I remember finding QBasic on my computer and experimenting with it. Though I couldn’t create my own executable files, I discovered ways to make simple adventure games. My early creations were rough single-objective, poorly executed games but they fueled my passion.

One day, a conversation with a stranger online sparked a realization. With enough planning (and more than a few cups of coffee and cola), I could breathe life into the black screen of a text-based world. I felt a profound sense of freedom and purpose, as if venturing into uncharted territory with only a lantern to guide me. This project is massive. A labor of love filled with twists, turns, and countless hours of development. It’s inspired by memories of my youth, like playing Zork on an old IBM PS/2 during a prairie storm, the wind howling outside and the smell of rain in the air. The experience blurred the line between game and reality, cementing my love for the genre. Now, I’m rekindling that passion and determined to get it right. Expect updates, nostalgic reflections, and moments of sappiness as I share this journey with you. My hope is to inspire a sense of adventure and wonder in you, just as these games once did for me.
